Well, it's like this. The whole ColdFusion deal SUCKS. It was basically a waste of $700, though not out of my pocket. Apparently there is "work being done and the project will be completed soon", though I've been hearing that for the past 3 months. It's not that big of a deal since we only made a downpayment and any kind of legal lawsuit would cost a lot more. Other factors also made it destined to fail, like finding a Windows server (since CF won't run on Unix) and the costs associated with running the application. But that's ok, we really don't even need it at this stage of the game.

We do, however, need a database redesign. PHP-Nuke is freeware that's highly customizable, secure, expandable, and upgradeable. It isn't hard to learn either. I'm not paying any more for any redesign, and since it's PHP front end and MySQL database, it should work out fine (this is the setup most sites actually use). I'm setting up a test sub-domain and once that's up and running I'll hopefully be able to show you guys some of the tinkering. If I have time between that and school.

The point of this thread is to get your input on PHP's pros/cons, as well as any downsides/vulnerabilities of the ever-upgraded PHP-Nuke.

I know very little about PHP but I do know someone who could maybe answer your questions. Let me know if you want his email address. He has built his own site from scratch, which is the one I am a moderator at.

It was still build using PostNuke, another utility. So he didn't code it from scratch. Any ideas on what's better/worse between PHP-Nuke and PostNuke? PHP-Nuke seems a LOT more popular...

http://www.postnuke.com/

Some of the highlights of PostNuke are

* Customisation of all aspects of the website's appearance through themes, including CSS support
* The ability to specify items as being suitable for either a single or all languages
* The best guarantee of displaying your webpages on all browsers due to HTML 4.01 transitional compliance
* A standard API and extensive documentation to allow for easy creation of extended functionality through modules and blocks

If you plan on using a "pre-built" script for the site, I'd suggest PHP-nuke...

It's one of those great projects that's supported by the fine people over at SF...If you need something done, chances are there is a mod/hack for it already.

I'm not really a PHP person though...and I'm not also a big fan of pre built scripts...I'd rather do it by hand in ASP...But then again that'd take a ton of time and prolly end up being not as good in the long run. It's impossible to create a product by yourself that is better then a group-run project...

Good luck Mikhail =D
